X-Files: I Want To Believe Panel, 8:18 pm
The X-Files
panel started ten minutes late, but that didn't dampen fan enthusiasm
at all. We started with the trailer first seen at San Diego's Comic Con
-- snowy settings! helicopters! car crashes! weird medical exams! -- to
wild applause before writer/producer Frank Spotnitz and
writer/producer/director Chris Carter (who snapped a photo of the
audience) took the stage -- and revealed plenty of details about the
film, due July 25:
* The story takes place in the present day, six years after the series ended.
* According to Spotnitz, the movie is a "stand alone, scary story" with a focus on Mulder and Scully's relationship.
* It's personal in a way the show couldn't be.
* Reuniting the cast was, according to Carter, "a lovefest, adding that they're like "a dysfunctional family, but family."
* When
asked by a fan if the lone gunman would make an appearance, Carter said
he was going to take a page from his own book and "deny everything."
* Scully's
family doesn't appear in the movie, though there may be references to
them; her brother was cut out of an early draft of the film.
* The title was Carter's and Spotnitz's idea (not Fox's).
* When
a fan asked if we'd be surprised by the evolution of Mulder and
Scully's relationship, Carter replied, "I don't know. Aren't you glad
you came?"
* There is something "very scary" in the movie -- so
scary that Carter actually laughs. "And then I wonder if people think
I'm strange."
* The Blu-Ray DVD, according to Spotnitz, will have
"lots of cool features," though they're not sure if there will be any
deleted scenes because they're still editing the film.
* Spotnitz
let it slip that there will be an X-File comic book series that will be
announced tomorrow. "Don't tell anyone!" Carter (jokingly) warned the
questioner.
Both Carter and Spotnitz expressed
gratitude to the fans for their continued support of the show, calling
the fan response "the most rewarding" part of making the film. And,
before leaving, they put to rest at least two of the lingering
questions from the show's nine-year run: Mulder's sister is definitely
dead, and Mulder is definitely the father of Scully's baby.
"- Mitch Pillegi is in the movie? Heaven knows.
